We asked Coalo if they could replace two removed willow trees on Fauconberg Road (at the corner of St Thomas’ Road) and after the new saplings had been planted we started to look after the tarmac areas around the trees. Working with residents from the council block that overlooks the gardens we added tough flowers into the “veins “ where the roots of the previous mature willows had broken up the tarmac, and also planted hedges of tiny rosemary and erysimum plants around the edges. We also water the trees and added mulch around their roots. Slowly the tarmac began to come to life, showing that even the toughest corner can become a thing of beauty and biodiversity.
“I walk past this most days, it is quite lovely.”
